PATTAYA, Thailand – Following public concern over the unauthorized setup of a luxurious campsite with tables on Jomtien Beach, Pattaya Mayor Poramet Ngampichet has instructed the Jomtien Area Chief of Public Works to investigate the matter. The mayor responded to the controversy after images of the campsite circulated widely, raising questions about who had authorized the use of public beach space for private purposes.
The area chief reported that officials regularly monitor Jomtien Beach, from Dongtan Curve to Jomtien Beach Soi 19, as part of their daily duties. However, investigations revealed that the area in question falls outside Pattaya City’s jurisdiction. The city has pledged to coordinate with neighboring municipalities, including Na Jomtien Sub-district, to address the issue collaboratively.
Many residents expressed concerns about public spaces being misused, noting that if left unregulated, others might follow suit, turning the beach into a private area inaccessible to the public. Some criticized the lack of enforcement, pointing out ongoing issues such as overcrowded parking and unauthorized vending vehicles, which officials have yet to address effectively.
Others emphasized the need for responsible behavior, suggesting that visitors who picnic or gather should prioritize cleanliness and respect the shared space. Some residents called for stricter measures, while others expressed skepticism, fearing the issue might fade without resolution due to potential influence from those benefiting financially.
The situation highlights the broader challenge of balancing public access, local governance, and enforcement on Pattaya’s popular beaches. Residents are now closely monitoring how authorities will handle this matter, calling for swift action to protect public spaces.
